KraFT Project

Shrimp shell as raw material for sustainable feed and feed additives

KraFt is a project with the aim of using the remains after shelling shrimps as raw material for feed and feed additives. The scientists from Kaesler Nutrition are cooperating within the KraFt project with scientists from the Helmholtz-Zentrum and Alfred-Wegener-Institut für Polar und Meeresforschung to develop processes for the sustainable use of shrimp shells.

Only 30% of the shrimp (the shrimp meat) is actually used at present. The rest is seen as waste yet contains considerable amounts of essential nutrients that can be put to good use in the feedstuffs in the entire feed sector.

About the project

The research project aims to promote the processing of North Sea shrimp and use of shrimp shells in the state of Bremen as well as to process the leftovers from shelling the shrimps into feed pellets for use in aquaculture and feed additives for the entire feed sector.

Kaesler Nutrition GmbH is working on processes to isolate the relevant nutrients from the shell remains, therefore closing cycles by using the valuable nutrients in the shells to make new feedstuffs.

The KraFt project within the Applied Environmental Research programme is funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the state of Bremen.
