Lovit Granule Calm reduces losses caused by severe cannibalism
Feather pecking and cannibalism lead to serious economic losses in laying hens and cause animal welfare problems for the egg producers. To counteract these losses and improve behaviour, Lovit Granule Calm was tested in a case of severe cannibalism in an older flock of laying hens under field conditions.
Acute mortality associated with the described abnormal behaviour results in serious economic losses and causes animal welfare problems for the poultry producers. The feeding regime and the stimuli occurring in the environment, or lack thereof, are not the only cause of feather pecking and cannibalism; there are numerous indications of a genetic predisposition, experiences in the rearing phase and individual predispositions such as hyperactivity of single animals. Search for the trigger and measures to be taken require time and financial resources, while mortality in the flock increases and productivity decreases.
To support laying hens during phases of cannibalism and feather pecking, a field trial was conducted with Lovit Granule Calm containing tryptophan, magnesium, vitamin E, vitamin B12, nicotinamide, and selenium for neurological support.
